Course Overview

Your day-to-day tasks may include:• measuring surface areas and working out how much paint or wall covering is needed• preparing the materials you need• stripping off old wallpaper or layers of paint• filling holes and cracks and making sure surfaces are level• covering surfaces with primer and undercoat• mixing paint to the right shade, often using computerised colour-matching equipment• applying coats of paint, hanging wallpaper and adding special finishes like glazes or marbling• tidying up after finishing, and cleaning your tools On industrial jobs, use of abrasive methods like sandblasting to remove old paintwork, and apply finishes with spray-painting equipment. If you like to work with surfaces, have a good eye for detail and are creative then this is the course for you. European Projects and the opportunity to compete in Regional and UK Competitions will be available.

Entry Requirements

UK Requirements

4 GCSEs Grades D-G to include Maths and English Grade E

ROI Requirements

4 OLCs Grades O5-O8 to include Maths and English Grade O6

Students will be required to attend work experience which will be organised on a weekly basis or in blocks throughout the calendar year.

Further Study

Students without Maths and English at grade C or above will have the opportunity to complete essential skills to Level 2 as part of the programme of study. On successful completion of the Level 2 Dip or employment status/entry qualifications it is possible to progress onto full time employment on Apprenticeship NI programme.

Salary GuideStarter: £15,000 to £18,000Experienced: £21,000 to £25,000Highly Experienced: £25,000 to £30,000Self-employed painters and decorators set their own pay rates.With experience, you could become a team supervisor or move into related areas like estimating, contract management, interior or set design, or apprentice training.
