Course Overview

A Playworker engages and supports children through life stages or who have had negative life experiences and need to build resilience, vital for healthy brain development, making friends, exploring and engaging with the world. The ability to plan meaningful play to suit children of all abilities is hugely important as we actually "learn through play". This qualification aims to develop confidence, skills and knowledge so that you can apply for leadership roles in an Out of School Play Centre, Adventure Centre, After School Club, Holiday Centre Representative, or become a Playworker, Leisure Centre Assistant, Hospital Playworker or open own business. The skills you need to develop:• excellent communication • ability to work with children and staff in sensitive, positive ways• creativity and imagination for activities • planning, organisational and ICT skills. You will have access to indoor and outdoor play and practical resources. Your work will be assessed via practical tasks, assignments and placement assessment, which means no final exams to sit with excellent progression opportunities.

Entry Requirements

UK Requirements

Level 2 Diploma for Children’s Care, Learning & Development or Playwork OR Level 2 Diploma / Qualification from another curriculum area, OR 4 GCSEs, (Grade C or above); Students with lower grades can be accepted using accreditation for prior learning (e.g. Outdoor pursuits, community work, volunteering residential) as this is a specialist qualification.Attendance at information session also required.

ROI Requirements

UK Level 2 Diploma for Children’s Care, Learning & Development or Playwork OR UK Level 2 Diploma / Qualification from another curriculum area, OR 4 OLCs (Grade 05 or above) OR Leaving Cert Applied – Merit. Students with lower grades can be accepted to level 2 Playwork through APEL Attendance at information session also required.

Work Placement

Placement requirements are mandatory with a minimum of 8-10 hours per week depending on setting over the year. Enrolment on the course will depend on satisfactory Access NI checks . Playwork students also participate in residential weekends and summer schemes that build on their experiences and hours.

Further Study

You may also decide to continue your studies with us by progressing to * HND in Early Childhood Education and Care * Foundation Degree in Early Childhood Studies You can also progress to the Level 4 Certificate in Community Youth Studies and then the Degree in Youthwork or to Degree in Playwork or Social Work (note that basic entry requirements for Higher level study depend on the Universities entry criteria (typically GCSE grade C in English and Maths). You may also progress to an MA in Play Therapy.

Career Prospects

On completion of this course, you will be a qualified Playworker equipped with the knowledge and skills for employment in both the Playwork and Early Years sector.
