Course Overview

This one year, full-time City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Practical Horticulture Skills course provides students with a wide range of skills for employment in horticulture. Students are taught mainly through practical tuition on our sites in Strabane and Springtown. The college has a strong link with CAFRE for progression with clear routes for progression. The course will involve site visits to CAFRE campus as part of the programme exposing students to the wide range of options available within the Horticulture industry. Course content;Horticulture production (propagation, caring for horticulture crops, etc) Landscape and garden maintenance (plant identification, assessing soils, using machinery, planting and maintaining plants, etc) The qualification has around 50 units which the tutor will tailor to student strengths in order to achieve the full diploma. Please note this course will only run subject to adequate numbers.

No work placement requirement to achieve qualification however as part of the programme work placement will be offered as an option for those students wishing to pursue a career in horticulture.

What's Next?

Further Study

Most Level 2 students take up employment in the industry on completion of the course but some high achieving students may have the opportunity to progress on to CAFRE City & Guilds Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Horticulture. The college award winning Careers Academy team will be on hand throughout the year to advise on suitable options for progression.

Career Prospects

Students can follow career paths in landscape, sports turf, edible or ornamental crop production and retail sectors.
