Course Overview

This academic level 5 course is for those working in a variety of settings supporting individuals who misuse alcohol and/or drugs. The diversity of modules is aimed at enhancing the student’s depth and breadth of knowledge and skills, enabling him/her to provide effective and evidence-based support. The course also aims to help students develop an understanding of personal, professional, ethical and legal issues that may affect practice and to foster personal and professional development in terms of reflective practice and self-awareness. The course is completed over 3 academic years, with exit award Certificate in Higher Education possible after 18 months. The modules include: Impact of Substance Misuse on Health & Well-being, Recognition of Drug & Alcohol Use, Legal and Ethical Issues in Drugs and Alcohol, Screening, Assessment and Support Planning, Therapeutic Interventions for substance use, Harm Reduction Strategies, Evidence Based Practice, Effective Helping Relationships, Work Based Learning, Hidden Harm and Mental Health.Each student must have Access NI clearance for 240 hours of Work Based learning and be deemed ‘placement ready’ by the College.

Entry Requirements

UK Requirements

Applicants must satisfy the University’s general entry requirements as set out in the prospectus or demonstrate their ability to undertake the course through the accreditation of prior experiential learning (APEL). The initial offer standard may vary from year to year. APEL / APL applications should be submitted by end of May in the year of application prior to admission to the course. To satisfy the minimum General Entry Requirements applicants must: (a) provide evidence of competence in written and spoken English (GCSE grade C or equivalent); and (b) have attained passes in four different subjects, of which one should be at GCE Advanced (A) level and three at GCSE level (grades A, B or C) or an equivalent standard in an approved alternative qualification. Note: vocational qualifications from some awarding bodies are not accepted by the university.UCAS Tariff – 16 points. Applicants must also provide satisfactory ACCESSNI Enhanced Disclosure at commencement of the course.In the event of the course being oversubscribed, interviews may be used for the purpose of selection.

Further Study

Students who successfully complete the Foundation Degree may be eligible to apply for entry to the final year of the BSc Hons Health and Wellbeing, or BSc Hons Applied Health Studies Programmes at Ulster University.
