Course Overview

This is an exciting new course at NWRC. The health and fitness industry is continuing to grow, leading to many employment opportunities for people with industry-recognised qualifications. The mandatory content of this course allows learners to develop technical skills in working with clients in a health and fitness environment. Many lecturers on the team are active practitioners in the fitness industry, with a wealth of professional industry experience. These qualifications are intended for post-16 learners who arelooking to progress to employment or higher education. This course is ideal for students keen to continue to higher education, e.g. progression to Foundation Degree or University Degree programmes. It is a full extended Diploma meaning it is equivalent to 3 A Levels, allowing for opportunity to gain UCAS points for progression to University.

Entry Requirements

UK Requirements

4 GCSEs (Grade C or above); OR Level 2 Diploma

ROI Requirements

4 OLC (Grade O5 or above) OR Leaving Certificate Applied – Merit .

Work Placement

The nature of this course will require students to engage with employers within the industry at regular intervals. In Year 2 of the programme students have the opportunity to complete an Erasmus project to a European country. In 2019 sports students travelled to Malta for a two-week work placements in Sports Coaching, Fitness Instructing, and Teaching.

What's Next?

Further Study

Students will achieve UCAS points through completion of this course. Therefore, progression to higher education, i.e. Foundation Degrees and University Degrees remains a valid option for many students. Depending on the grade profile achieved, progression routes can include our Foundation Degree in Sport (validated by Ulster University) and degrees such as PE Teaching, Sports Coaching, Fitness Instruction and Sports Development at universities such as Ulster University, Liverpool Hope, Liverpool John Moore’s and University of Central Lancashire.

Career Prospects

This course is ideal for students keen to move directly into employment within the fitness industry. The course content provides learners with up-to-date knowledge, understanding and practical skills to pursue a career in the fitness industry.
