Course Overview

This fascinating course enables the exploration of laboratory and field techniques of the applied scientist. It will provide you with a wide range of essential knowledge, skills and practical techniques for the science sector or further study. The course has a strong focus on the application of theory to real-life industrial settings and will deepen your science knowledge, allowing the opportunity for many progression pathways. Within the course there are forensic science units which allow an insight into this specialist work as well as a combination of optional modules opening doors into both employment and further study in a range of applied science areas.This course is combined of both external and internal assignments. The external assessments are exams based on practical skills, research development, knowledge and application across biology, chemistry, and physics contexts. The internal assignments are assessed using assignments, many with a strong focus on practical work and industry related knowledge. There are opportunities for project development in a science area of your choosing and the potential to enter Worldskills competitions.

4 GCSEs (Grade C or above) including a Science subject, English and Maths

ROI Requirements

4 OLCs (Grade 05 or above) including a Science subject, plus English and Maths; OR Leaving Cert Applied - (Merit) to include one Science elective module.

Further Study

This course provides the equivalent of 3 A Levels. You can progress to a range of Higher Education courses such as the Ulster University Foundation Degree in Applied and Medical Sciences or onto BSc Hons or MSc degree programmes such as Forensic Science, Criminology, Analytical Chemistry, Biomedical Science, Veterinary Science, Radiography, Environmental Science, as well as traditional routes such as biology, chemistry and physics HE courses. The qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as meeting, or contributing to, admission requirements for many relevant Science courses. It also provides the skills for direct route into employment within the science sector or higher level apprenticeships.

Career Prospects

A qualification in applied science will help you to develop the understanding, knowledge and skills needed to work in a broad range of jobs in this industry. These could include Agricultural Research Scientist, Ambulance Paramedic, Analytical Scientist, Audiologist, Biochemist, Biologist, Biomedical Scientist, , Chemical Engineer, Chemical Plant Process Operator, Dental Nurse, Food Scientist, Health and Safety Inspector, Laboratory Technician, Medical Laboratory Assistant, Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist etc. Both the Science Council and the Royal Society of Chemistry endorse the course as a qualification that can lead to professional recognition as a registered science technician.
