Course Overview

Bricklaying is a skill which is in high demand by small and medium sized construction companies and therefore apprenticeship and employment opportunities are good across Northern Ireland. There are actually a number of different types of ‘brick’ each one differing in what its best used for and what its made of. Thats before you get to colour and size differences. Using the right brick is integral to creating solid, durable structures. As a bricklayer you will work within the Construction Industry both on commercial and residential projects. You can work internally and externally on residential and commercial projects. If you like to interpret drawings, set out, measure, construct and finish, then this is the career for you. Enrichment activities and personnel development workshops on mental health, road safety and cultural diversity are built into the programme. Our students also have the opportunity to compete in Regional and UK Competitions.

UK Requirements

4 GCSEs Grades D-G to include Maths Grade D and English Grade E

ROI Requirements

4 OLCs Grades O5-O8 to include Maths Grade O5 and English Grade O6

Students will be required to attend work experience which will be organised on a weekly basis or in blocks throughout the calendar year.

Further Study

Students without Maths and English at grade C or above will have the opportunity to complete essential skills to Level 2 as part of the programme of study. On successful completion of the Level 2 Diploma or employment status/pre entry criteria it is possible to progress onto full time employment on Apprenticeship NI programme with further options for progression including a Higher National Certificate, Higher National Diploma, NEBOSH, or a degree.

Career Prospects

Skills that are in demand are brickwork repair, pointing, rendering, restoration, conservation, stone cladding.You can become a site manager and some of our Lecturers started where you are now.If you are good the industry with the highest salary for Bricklaying jobs is Construction. The average Construction salary for Bricklaying jobs is £36,679. In November 2019, the salary rose by 13 per cent. It should be noted that during economic booms the salary can be higher and then the opposite is also true.
