Course Overview

This course is designed to equip students with the skills, knowledge and the understanding necessary to achieve high performance in the global built environment and renewable technologies construction sector. Construction and the Built Environment is a priority skills area and there are many opportunities for those qualified in this area to progress into employment as designers, engineers, contractors or as consultants. The course will allow you the opportunity to find your specialism/ pathway in the areas of Construction Management, Architectural Technology, Modern Methods of Construction, Quantity Surveying or Civil Engineering. The course will provide you with an understanding of the way technologies are transforming the industries of construction, renewable technologies and the built environment to prepare you to work with these technologies within a challenging and rewarding industry. SSE Renewables Scholarship Students who enrol on the HNC/D programme are also eligible to apply for an SSE Renewables Scholarship. Successful students, who meet criteria for the award, receive a bursary equal to half of their course fees.

Further Study

Successful completion of the HNC course will allow students to progress to the Level 5 Higher National Diploma qualification at NWRC or to another higher education qualification such as a university degree in a construction, renewable technologies or a built environment related area. Students who complete the HND qualification can be offered second year entry to built environment programmes at University subject to meeting their entry requirements. Successful completion of the HND at NWRC allows students to gain direct entry to year 2 of the BSc (Hons) in Architectural Technology and BSc (Hons) in Construction Management courses at Atlantic Technological University (ATU) Donegal, formerly LYIT, subject to university requirement approval, Students can also choose to study the Tender and Procurement unit as part of their qualification which will allow direct entry into year 2 of the professionally accredited BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying course at ATU.

Career Prospects

The BTEC Higher National Certificate and Diploma in Construction qualifications have been updated for 2023 to link more directly to sector career pathways. This is an industry recognised qualification. In developing the programme, the Awarding Body, Pearson BTEC, have aligned content to meet requirements of a number of professional bodies, including the Institution of Civil Engineers, Chartered Institute of Architectural technologists and the Chartered Institute of Building. The course will prepare students for employment in a range of careers in construction and the built environment, including architectural technology, civil engineering, building services engineering, quantity surveying, construction management, either with design consultants, contractors or the public sector.

Additional Information

This course is assessed through 100% coursework. The course consists of core units (which are mandatory), specialist units (which have been designed to provide a specific occupational focus to the qualification) and optional units. The make-up of units will depend on the sector career pathway chosen. Units are assessed in several ways including written assignments, research work, group activities, practical work and presentations.
