Course Overview

The BTEC Level 4 HNC Higher Level Apprenticeship programme is designed to prepare apprentices for a range of technical and management careers within the Built Environment sector including Architectural Technology, Civil Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Construction Management and Renewable Engineering. Apprentices will be employed by a company within the construction industry and attend NWRC on a day release model, one day per week, to study for their HNC qualification over a 2-year period. The course will equip students with the skills, knowledge, and the understanding necessary to achieve high performance in the global construction and the built environment sector. Students will gain an understanding of the way technologies are transforming the industries of construction and the built environment and prepare them to work with these technologies within a challenging and rewarding industry.

Entry Requirements

UK Requirements

Applicants must have achieved the equivalent of 48 UCAS Tariff points together with a minimum of 5 passes at GCSE Grade C or above, which must include Mathematics, English Language or equivalent Level 2 qualifications, OR a BTEC National Diploma at MP grade or above OR a BTEC National Extended Diploma at PPP grade or above in a relevant area of study (including GCSE Mathematics, English Language or equivalent Level 2 qualification). Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) may be considered for entry.

Applicants must have achieved the equivalent of 48 UCAS Tariff points together with 5 OLCs at Grade 04 or above in to include Mathematics and English. Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) may be considered for entry.

Work Placement

Applicants will need to be in employment or about to take up employment in a company within the construction and built environment sector. You can be an existing employee upskilling and moving to a new job role or a newly recruited employee taking up a permanent contract of employment.

Further Study

Students who complete the qualification will benefit from the opportunities for deeper learning and can develop the knowledge and academic study skills they need to progress to a Level 5 Higher National Diploma or to university degree course in a construction, renewable technologies or a built environment related area.

Career Prospects

In developing the programme, the awarding body, Pearson BTEC have worked closely with the majority of the construction related professional bodies including the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT), the Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE) and the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB). By aligning the content and assessment activities to agreed professional body competency standards, students are supported to develop as professional practitioners for the future in a range of careers in construction and the built environment at technician level. This includes careers in the Modern Methods of Construction industry, architectural technology, construction management, and to some extent, civil engineering, building services engineering and quantity surveying. Employment could be with design consultants, contractors or with the public sector.
