Responding to Alcohol and Drug Use (Yr 3 of 3) (Level 5 Ulster University Foundation Degree)

Course Overview

This academic level 5 course is for those working in a variety of settings supporting individuals who misuse alcohol and/or drugs. The diversity of modules is aimed at enhancing the student’s depth and breadth of knowledge and skills, enabling him/her to provide effective and evidence-based support. The course also aims to help students develop an understanding of personal, professional, ethical and legal issues that may affect practice and to foster personal and professional development in terms of reflective practice and self-awareness. The course is completed over 3 academic years, with exit award Certificate in Higher Education possible after 18 months. The modules include: Impact of Substance Misuse on Health & Well-being, Recognition of Drug & Alcohol Use, Legal and Ethical Issues in Drugs and Alcohol, Screening, Assessment and Support Planning, Therapeutic Interventions for substance use, Harm Reduction Strategies, Evidence Based Practice, Effective Helping Relationships, Work Based Learning, Hidden Harm and Mental Health.Students who successfully complete the Foundation Degree may be eligible to apply for entry to the final year of the BSc Hons Health and Wellbeing Programme at Ulster University. Each student must have Access NI clearance for Work Based Learning and be deemed ‘placement ready’ by the College.240 hours of Work Based Learning in a relevant setting must be completed in year 3
